Public Transport: Ticket Options

Paying for a journey by public transport is now easier than ever! With a number of season tickets available in the area, contactless payments accepted on most services and even the option of purchasing and storing tickets on your smartphone you’ll find it super easy to find a payment method that suits you!

If you are a regular public transport user, make sure that you have spent some time exploring ways you could save some money. Paying on the day may be a quick and flexible option, but you could make some serious savings by buying a monthly or annual pass, or by booking your travel in advance.

Stagecoach Bus Ticketing

The most frequent local services to Lincoln are operated by Stagecoach, who offer a range of ticketing options aimed at making your journeys as cheap as possible. They also now accept contactless payments on all of their services, which is ideal if you plan on paying for your bus journey on the day of your travel.

Train Tickets

Finding good value train tickets is easier than ever, with a number of great online tools available! Both Lincoln and Metheringham train stations have ticket machines, making purchasing train tickets in person really simple. Alternatively, the EMR or the Trainline app gives you the ability to purchase digital tickets to store on your smartphone, as well as giving you live journey information.

Advance tickets can offer lower fares on specific services, subject to availability. Booking windows and purchase deadlines vary by operator, and some Advance tickets are available on the day of travel. Check the conditions for your chosen train before booking.

Season Tickets

If you regularly make the same rail journey, compare ordinary season tickets, Flexi Season tickets and daily fares for your actual travel pattern. Savings and any Photocard or photo-ID requirements depend on the ticket and provider; check the current conditions before buying.

Flexi Season tickets provide eight days of travel within 28 days between specified stations, an average of two days per week. Activate a day of travel before boarding. National Rail advertises a minimum 20% discount against an equivalent Monthly Season ticket, but Flexi covers eight travel days rather than unlimited travel. Compare the total cost for your actual journey and travel pattern before buying.

Eligible travellers may save with a Railcard, commonly one-third off eligible fares; discounts and time/fare restrictions vary, and the 16–17 Saver has different terms.

There are a number of different concessions for seniors wishing to travel locally and nationally in England, across all types of public transport. For more information about eligibility and the concessions available check out Age UK’s guide by following the link below.
